TCM: The Beginning (2006)

It’s interesting to see how the demented family in the first remake came to be and it’s always a hoot to see R. Lee Ermey (FULL METAL JACKET) portraying a crazier-than-shit bad guy. The Vietnam stuff falls flat, done way too many times before—and you know at the beginning that none of these people are going to survive (or else there’d be no first movie, which takes place five years after the events in this one).
The origin of "Tommy", known to us as Leatherface, is explained—how he was birthed at the meat packing plant, born deformed, with a face-eating disease and left for dead in a garbage bin. He’s adopted by a homeless lady who finds him when picking through the garbage, then we’re shown a montage of him through the years—3 years old, 6 years old, 9 years old, et cetera, until he’s an adult and starts killing people with a chainsaw. It’s also explained in the movie why the Hewitt family has no qualms about cannibalism.
TCM: THE BEGINNING is not as good as the first remake but it’s far better than the first two SAW movies or THE HILLS HAVE EYES re-do.
